New Illinois Hearing Aids Coverage Update

Great news for Illinois residents who need hearing assistance: on January 1, 2025, two recently passed state mandates that improve access to hearing aid coverage went into effect. Here’s what you need to know about the new and expanded coverage of hearing aids and hearing supportive services in Illinois and whose access is improved by the change. To learn more about Illinois’s legislation updates that impact healthcare and insurance in 2025 and beyond, read more here.

First, all medically necessary hearing equipment that is prescribed by a medical professional is now required to be covered in Illinois. Additionally, the age limit for coverage has been removed, meaning that everyone, regardless of age, has insurance coverage for their prescribed hearing aids and hearing services. This means that every person who requires hearing assistance will receive full coverage of one hearing aid per ear per every 24 months, and related hearing care has to be covered by insurance.

Next, the limits that insurance companies were previously able to place on hearing aid and hearing services coverage is now over: insurance companies must cover these services with no price cap. For consumers, this could imply major savings, given that the cost of hearing aids and care will now be fully included.

The best news? These changes are now in effect for every Illinois resident, whether you’re on an Individual or Group health insurance plan. The Insurance People are grateful for legislators who understand healthcare access as a right and worked hard to pass these mandates.
